Seriously. With hammock, backpacking trip has never been any simpler than this. Ever since travel hammock was invented back in 1997, the camping game has totally revolutionized. It’s no longer bound to ideal grounds--even cliff wall can be a camping site with the right hammock accessories. The campsite has been widened to every corner of the wilderness. Sleep in a string line just above the water. Chill in 150 ft high in the air between sandstone mountains. Take a shelter in the dense woods.
Stop anywhere. Make every outdoor dream possible with hammock.
The revolution of camping doesn’t stop here just yet. With every backpackers thrives for a lighter pack, hammock comes as an airy solution; it cuts down many weigh and save many spaces. Single or double, TTTM’s foldable hammock is meant to be rolled down to a very compact and airy luggage--it just weighs 1.1 lbs (17.6 oz) which are even less half the weight of your puffy jacket! Even when combined with tree straps, carabiners, and other camping hammock accessories, they are still very lightweight and take up such a few spaces in your backpack. Now you can even bring other fancy camping gears and more food to upgrade your outdoor experience. If you are an avid backpacker, you would know that any inches of spare room count. Warm clothes, meal preparations, travel shelters, and camping gears are competing for small space in your backpack, and it takes tough consideration to choose which items to left at home. When storage is a hot item, the small pack of a hammock can easily win the situation.
The high portability makes it very ideal as a sleeping option for every backpacking trip. Besides, who can resist the awesomeness of a hammock?
The air is getting warmer. it’s time to slip your portable foldable hammock to the backpack and start venturing beyond borders. Travel further, walk deeper. The wilderness is waiting!
No doubt, camping with lightweight hammock cut down a bulk of pounds and tempt almost everyone to leave the old tent days behind and jump on hammock bandwagon. However, it can be scary to get out of your comfort zone and sometimes you want to bring along the old friend to your very first hammock test drive. It means that you need to bring two sleeping system with you, but you won’t the only one. Some other seasoned hikers and wildlife scientists like to bring two sleeping systems—the tents to set in the communal camping base and the ultralight folding hammock to bring for venturing deeper into the wilderness. This kind of arrangement allows them to explore into denser and rougher woodlands interior where it’s almost impossible to find a flat surface, before returning to the base camp and share their exploration. In other circumstances, some family campers still need to bring tents along with the hammock to accommodate the young who have not yet familiar with the sleeping suspension system.
In a situation like this, you can thank the lightness of hammock once again for not making your back scream. Sure, your backpack will still be going to be heavy with all the tent and stuff, but it won’t make it any heavier. A light pack of parachute hammock and all hammock accessories don’t make any difference in terms of weight--but they seriously inject a heavy dose of fun into your camping trip.
Camping with hammocks allows everyone in the group to have an individual sleeping station and still hanging close which each other without taking too much space, as to how group camping with tents does. You can hang two to three hammock under one tarp, side by side or bunk bed style. Maintaining individual space during camping is great as you can arrange insulation and sleeping method totally on your preference. Taking the sleeping bag or going-it-all with the down quilt, you decide! You also maintain absolute freedom to sleep and wake up anytime without disturbing anyone in the group. Want to spend your first few minutes after waking up just lounging idly in your hammock? No one will disrupt you!
One thing backpackers loved the most about hammock is the practicality of its gears. The amount and type of hammock accessories you need to bring will be varied depends on the time and camping site. Camping on the middle of summer is usually the lightest. Just pack the standards—a light pack of a single hammock, tree straps, and its carabiners—and you are good to go.
If this is your first time buying hammock, you might get a little lost with what to buy, which gear to picks, and that’s even before spending the next fifteen minutes choosing color schemes for designing your very own hammock.
As a no-brainer, this suspended sleeping system rely upon rope suspension to hang between sturdy materials, but which one to choose? Hammocks are equipped with two kinds of suspension, ropes and tree straps, and it’s important to know the difference between both. Rope, the oldest suspension system, was widely used to strap the hammock to the tree, but it was before we know that it can dig to the barks and eventually hurt the trees. Modern hammock camping strongly doesn’t recommend the use of rope for hanging between the trees. However, the thin and strong structure of a rope makes it a perfect choice for indoor hanging, cliff wall-hammocking, hanging Highline, between poles, on the iceberg, between the jeeps, and basically anywhere but the trees.
When it comes to the trees, you guess it--It’s time for the tree straps. Sometimes known as tree huggers, this kind of straps are a lot wider than ropes and just as strong. The design allows hammock campers to suspend safely between trees without harming the nature we love so much.
Ticket to The Moon’s most loved tree straps, the Moonstraps, was made with Leave No Trace and eco-tourism philosophy in mind. It’s wide and safe for the trees, leaving zero to minimum trace after you take the suspension off the trees. The Moonstrap can easily withstand 200kg static load—that means you, your partner, and your dog can lounge comfortably without worrying about being slammed to the ground. With nine attachment loops sewn along the straps, you gonna have a very quick installation time and super easy adjustment. No advanced knotting needed!
Moving on to next accessories, you gonna need carabiners or S hooks to attach the hammock to the suspension. S hooks are lighter and smaller than carabiners. but carabiners are more practical and more reliable to handle supreme strength. All TTTM hammock come with standard S-hooks which are definitely okay to take to your first hammock adventure. However, you can upgrade to carabiner anytime when you are making your purchase, and it will definitely be great! Made from cold-forged aluminum alloy and made in asymmetrical D shape, carabiners can withstand even the roughest climate and hold up to 4850 lbs—that’s more than four bulky bodybuilders at once!
When you are camping with hammock, it’s good to bring a hammock tarp with you. You can make this gear on your own (remember that large old blue tarp in your basement?) It can work quite well to provide a shade against the sun and protection from the rain. It might not, however, goes with light camping philosophy of hammock, and maybe it’s time to hammock tarp. Made with nylon polyester, it’s definitely as lightweight as the hammock and can be folded as neatly.
When you just convert to the foldable hammock camping, do you need to go all out and purchase everything new? Almost everyone starts with tent camping, and there are definitely lots of gear that are still very usable for camping with a foldable hammock.
Stakes, for example, can be a support for hammock tarp, though not always necessary. The tarp can be set up by only looping the ropes tightly to the tree bark or roots, or pegged down to the earth. Just like the classic way.
The standard gears are a means to support the functionality of a hammock. But when it comes to the real sleep, it’s not much different than the old camping days, if not better. You can even combine your old camping accessories with you!
Some people like to bring their old sleeping bag to keep them warm inside the hammock, some people feel it’s like being trapped inside a double cocoon. Other backpackers even aim for the lightest, and a roll of sleeping pad is just the perfect solution in terms of lightweight insulation though it might not as comfy as the under quilt-top quilt combo. For avid backpackers, this is a good price to pay, as long as the weather permits.
Some people, however, prefer to take the under quilt—a specific gear designed for hammock that will prevent the insulation to get pressed by the body and keep the cold-butt syndrome at bay. Enveloping your hammock from below, under quilt was designed to keep the warmth insulated properly, keep your freedom to move inside, and prevent the insulation to get pressed by your body. An under quilt like TTTM’s Moonquilt is the kind of insulation you want to take for heavy duty hammock camping such as the winter camp, when you need to survive in rough weather. It can fits both single and double hammock, and you will love to find that a regular down quilt can be turned into a sleeping bag or blanket anytime!
Another hammock accessories that will be handy for any backpacking is the famous mosquito net. This awesome gear is just a killer. It prevents the disturbance of nosy mosquitos and itchy bites, it also gives you 360º protection without disturbing your view with the transparent fabric. You can lounge casually in the middle of a jungle and get absorbed into the surrounding without worry about nothing until it’s time to set up the tarp. No need to be confined into a small shelter just for avoiding the insects!
If you are a serious hammock camper and want to take care of your hammock properly, you gonna love hammock sleeve in the first sight. This special gear is invented to protect your beloved travel hammock while it’s not being used, preventing premature fading due to the sun and make the hammock last longer. Afraid of losing extra space just for this gear? Fear not. The sleeve will cover the hammock from the inside (of the bag), so there’s no need for another sack. This gear actually speeding up hammock installation time as you only need to unclip the sleeve from the hammock and pull the Express setting bag to the other end. It works the same way for the takedown, saving a lot of valuable time from untangling your hammock.
Sure, it feels great to venture to the outdoor and beyond. it gives a good feeling when you can be an exemplary explorer who leads the No Trace Policy when your hammock left zero to minimum impact in the camping ground. While you pick up the right hammock accessories to sustain the wild life. It feels even greater when you know that you can make a real contribution to a community in need simply by purchasing your hammock.
With each TTTM portable hammock you buy, you are helping the Indonesian frontiers at Sumba to have better education, build a new well, and get electricity streams to their wooden houses. The Ticket To The Moon foundation has been in close touch with the Kodi Tribes deep in Sumba, the eastern part of Indonesia, who previously lived with malaria and dengue, without having clear water, roads, or electricity. Since 2006, Ticket To The Moon has been trying to make a better life for the Kodi; connecting roads, built schools, gives malaria screening, and help the tribe with access to clean water, healthcare, and food. This sustainable social project was made possible with every purchase in Ticket To The Moon.
